So, is Epica the last Symphonic Metal outfit standing? Apart from the newly coined Surma, perhaps. Nightwish has gone all wobbly on us with Marko Hietala now firmly away from the band.1) And now, this February 2021, Delain imploded and reverted into a solo project again. You have to give it to them. Epica are hugely popular and – in a way – have become the embodiment of the Symphonic Metal mainstream. And that might not necessarily be a good thing. Just sayin’.

Yet here, their newest clip Abyss of Time netted over a million views on YouTube with the piece only a few days out of the box. That’s called stellar and global reach. You may like their wares or you may not, but they do hit a nerve with the soft metal folks out there.

Epica are known for their penchant for super-epic, somewhat overstuffed, and choir-heavy productions. Starting as a Symphonic and Gothic Metal outfit with the astonishing The Phantom Agony, the band slowly evolved towards an orchestral-laden, bombastic style that left many of their earlier fans confused in their wake.

RockmusicRaider Review - Epica - Design Your Universe - Album CoverWell, is it better than the other records or is it not? After Consign to Oblivion I grew a bit wary of what I was going to find in this Pandora’s box that this band usually delivers. Much to my relief, Epica‘s fourth studio album Design Your Universe is probably one of the better records – previous and past. It kind of sounds like a mix between Delain, Within Temptation and Nightwish fueled by top quality vitamins. They actually quite shamelessly erred on the latter’s territory.
