Faun - and the Pop Culture - Four Records

When working on Faun‘s latest record Märchen & Mythen, I came across an undercurrent or two worth mentioning about this band. But those – understandably – steadfastly refused to integrate too well into the review. So here we are with yet another piece on this decidedly talented German Pagan Folk band.

And on the menu are – you probably guessed it – the birthing pains the band went through after the last major change of direction and its current and future implications.

Katja Moslehner left the Medieval and Pagan Folk masters Faun in 2017. If you remember, the lady joined in 2013, just in time for the release of the much-contested record Von den Elben.

Her era led trough those turbulent times that spawned the follow-on records Luna and Midgard. Albums that – together with the aforementioned Von den Elben – enjoyed (and still enjoy) an undeniable and pretty fulminant success. And this at a time where Faun faced significant attacks from an increasingly virulent fan base.

First, we need to get back down to earth. It’s a bit like one of those old satellites that re-enter the atmosphere before they burn and crash onto lands unknown. I have never seen a hype quite like the one Faun went through once they changed style and direction, first on Von den Elben and then followed by Luna. And a totally negative one at that.
