Eluveitie – Everything Remains (As it Never Was) (2010) – Review

[Updated and newly published version]

RockmusicRaider Review - Everything Remains (as it never was) - Album CoverThe 2010 and 4th full length album Everything Remains (As it Never Was) from the Swiss Pagan Metal band Eluveitie clearly is an improvement over the already pretty good former production Slania. And yep, I know, there was Evocation I in between. But hey, time will tell if I will review that one as well. In time.

This new record is much more melodious, but still fosters enough aggressive Melodeath underlaying its core to convince. And they deliver their tune in an improved, but still decidedly own household style and brand. On this record we can actually hear the hurdy-gurdy (hello and welcome, Anna), fiddles and the flutes.Got hooked? Raid this some more...

RockmusicRaider Review - Eluveitie - Slania - Album CoverSlania, Slania! Voice of a distant past. Ode to Helvetian and Celtic times, when the tribes ruled; as far as they could until the Romans arrived and made a mess out of it.

It appears that Chrigel Glanzmann, the lead singer of the Swiss band Eluveitie saw the name of this girl on an ancient slab of stone and decided to name a song and their 2nd studio album after her. Nice story, by the way: Se non è vero, è ben trovato – as we say in Italian.

Perhaps a tad too much glorification of a time historians hardly know about. When tribes (supposedly) ruled on the land today called Switzerland.Got hooked? Raid this some more...

RockmusicRaider Review - Eluveitie - Helvetios - Album CoverAh thank you, oh Helvetian Ones! You just have to love the drummer on steroids that the Swiss band Eluveitie (apparently the old pagan name of today’s Switzerland) employs. This guy seems to work himself from one nervous breakdown frenzy to another on his drums.

Combined with the savvy mix of modern day and archaic instruments AND again together with the usual growls and rumblings, ‘Helvetios‘ becomes an astonishing piece of Pagan Melodic Death Metal  or Folk Metal. Good work from the band around Chrigel Glanzmann – ‘Tis not bad at all.

The purists may lament (as they always do..) that there is too much mainstream that crept into the record.Got hooked? Raid this some more...

Eluveitie – Origins (2014) – Review

RockmusicRaider Review - Eluveitie - Origins - Album CoverGrrooowwwl!! Rrrummmbbllle!! Well, hells bells! A bunch of very talented people trying to destroy their music? Freight train gone astray? Drummer had too much energy drink? Fiddler out of control?? WTF!! But – to my own amusement – I do like it, harsh vocals and all. Origins from Eluveitie is good stuff, make no mistake.

Their music has an aggressive freshness that makes you go back, wanting some more. Kind of an addictive hate-love affair. But it does take some getting used to – an acquired taste, as one of my co-reviewers opined. And in all fairness, it is much more melodic than some of their counterparts; meaning – not hard enough for die-hard death metal fans.Got hooked? Raid this some more...
