I did not quite know anymore where to place this band. After the somewhat silly #YOLO that Finsterforst unchained in 2016, uncertainty truly set in. Did they go off the deep end? Or was that just something they always wanted to do?

And now, this.

Zerfall serves you with an 80-minute monster that will require some real commitment to digest. A relentless total metal war attack that you first need to survive until you can haul the headphones off your battle-weary ears.

We covered Mach Dich Frei of Finsterforst already in 2015 for the first time – in German. With the new record looming and RockmusicRaider with more than 510 posts under our belt, we decided to have another go at all that goodness. At these epic sounds reaching us from the – supposedly – darkest of all forests.

In the meantime, the RMR deck crew even insisted to cover Rastlos, which we quite enjoyed. So, something must be good with these folks, right?

RockmusicRaider Review - Finsterforst - Rastlos - Album CoverI came across Finsterforst via their latest 2014 record Mach Dich Frei and found them forest boys of good, crunchy quality. In style, clear delivery and technical prowess. Yet the lyrics were wanting somewhat, too much hate mail there. But by and large their tune turns out to be pretty mature.  

Now, their magic potion Rastlos is different. Not sure how to describe it: Insomnium with a Black Forest Pie flavor mixed with a portion of Moonsorrow style of bleak, black winter lakes?
