2023 started slowly. And at first, the RMR crew wasn’t quite sure where it would all lead to – or end. And by the word ‘end’, I mean the end of RMR. A lot of soul-searching went into this year’s continuation of a steady flow of reviews. Same as other music sites out there, we had our severe doubts if running a review ‘zine wasn’t just a fucking waste of internet space or not. The RMR crew was forever mesmerized by Folkesange, Myrkur‘s 2020 piece. Full-throttle and somewhat unhinged folk, tongue-in-cheek, with that hidden evil streak that renders Ms. Bruun‘s records so alluring. And I still vibrantly remember when M hit, that excellent piece so full of controversy. Half of the extreme metal adepts were foaming at the mouth and the rest kinda careened between disbelief and adoration. All of that led to an excellent brand of filigrane yet blackened fury that the RMR crew always found alluring.

No dice! That was the very first verdict on Convocation‘s No Dawn for the Caliginous Night. The record bounced off the RMR review desk like those terse one-line rulings the Supreme Court likes to issue. And this probably was a knee-jerk reaction, some sort of overdose of too much Raise to the Sky and Shores of Null.

But then – luckily – came the inevitable ‘wait a minute’. A welcome moment of reason. The roaring doomy soundscapes, the spectacular atmosphere, and the overall artistic delivery of No Dawn just cannot be missed after all.

Sorcerer – Reign of the Reaper (2023) – Review

The 2015 record In the Shadow of the Inverted Cross immediately got our full attention. The release marked the moment when Sorcerer finally came out of hibernation for real. After five years of trying to decide what they wanted to become since 2010, the year of resurrection of the band after a long time of stop ‘n’ go and deep freeze. And that record restarted their metal machinations with a friggin’ thunderclap.
