Doom ‘n’ gloom indeed formed an important part of last year’s metal DNA. Succulent, shiny morsels like Isole and Shores of Null stand proud in that dreary light they so lustfully project. But contrite RMR truly missed some excellent fare that somehow wasted away in our swampy review pipe until it washed ashore just a few days ago.

No dice! That was the very first verdict on Convocation‘s No Dawn for the Caliginous Night. The record bounced off the RMR review desk like those terse one-line rulings the Supreme Court likes to issue. And this probably was a knee-jerk reaction, some sort of overdose of too much Raise to the Sky and Shores of Null.

But then – luckily – came the inevitable ‘wait a minute’. A welcome moment of reason. The roaring doomy soundscapes, the spectacular atmosphere, and the overall artistic delivery of No Dawn just cannot be missed after all.

Methinks we just covered another one of Sergio González Catalán‘s musings. And sure enough, it was Winds of Tragedy, the blackened branch of this one-man band’s two-sided artistic spigot. Yet, the RMR crew had some reservations about that one with some elements that wouldn’t quite fit the mold.

Now, Rise to the Sky is back with Catalán on safe territories he knows best. And that is Doom Death Metal filled with weeping strings, soaring guitar riffs, and the relentless raw roar that is the man’s trademark.
