Ah, Forest Metal. Bands like Ellende or Waldgeflüster come to mind. Of course, the aforementioned outfits feature a different, darker style than Wintersun‘s latest. But hey, foresty musings can come in many forms. And we find all of those very hard to resist. Thus, seasonal greetings from under a leafy cover. Bungle in the jungle.

Somebody mentioned that Wintersun‘s 2017 full-length album The Forest Seasons was brimming with lush soundscapes, grand atmospheres, and all kinds of green and woody things. Neverus call their style Majestic Death Metal. There, that’s quite a statement. The cantankerous specimens over at the RMR review desk weren’t so sure what to make out of that metallic assault at first, though. Fleshgod Apocalypse’s King 2.0 or just an unholy concoction of unsavory mainstream ingredients? Time to paint that toque black, turn it inside out, and rip the recipe to shreds. Happy cooking!

Well, I take it back. In the past, the RMR crew often moaned about those Power Metal outfits being too cheesy or just too overboard with – well – anything. Some sweetishly rosy concoction that overdosed on too much sugar and colorful popsicles of undefined origins.

But Blind Guardian‘s newest record The God Machine made us raise our mutual heads quickly. Their brand is indeed powerful PM without the usual fondue. Ah, countless calories galore. I just went to the fondue shop to get my fix of milk fat, garlic, and loads of white wine. Together with two baguettes, of course. You do need nice, crusty bread to go with this dish of molten cheese.

Well, in hindsight, this is not something I should have done. Because little did I know that I’d get started on Avantasia‘s Moonglow anytime soon. Their 2019 record is so full of cheesy glory that – actually – there will be no need for future fondue excesses.
