I admit, since Malina happened, Leprous kinda left the RMR building and disappeared from our joint consciousness. We weren’t quite sure if this band would get further coverage.

And we still ain’t.

Now, the release of Pitfalls approaches and we’re getting bits and pieces of this new album. Videos rocking away in the good, ol’ coal mine, or whatever it is. Or the odd sales job that masks as an interview. You get the drift.

A variety of currents and undercurrents exist in the Progressive Metal universe. You get the thoughtful ones, those hauling emotion around like a shitload of bricks. The Reticent comes to mind. You have the experimental dudes like Wilderun, walking down the steps, towards alternative and avant-garde laden pastures.

And then you get the djent division.

Those who think that good prog inevitably must be stuffed with a goodly measure of djentability. Leprous or Vvon Dogma I are somewhat of an extremist example of those. And you’ll find many others of the same ilk, and their ardent supporters.

The RockmusicRaider offices just love those jewels all of a sudden ejected from the nameless masses of music creations. Like some sort of magic volcano gone to the other side. And specifically tasty are those bands that consciously and purposefully defy styles and currents. By this definition, they threaten to become their very own genre – a victim of their own success if you will. 2017 will be a good year for Progressive and Alternative Rock and Metal. And I have a feeling that some of them players will end up on the 2017 Top 10 Records list.

Increased sophistication seems to be the game these days, too. Away from heavy-handed djent-ism to more refined shores.
