Alright. It looks like Novarupta‘s latest concoction, Astral Sands, is the last partition of a four-piece journey into fantasyland, meaning the infamous four elements. Yes, the ones used by pagan religions of the past and present to great effect all over the world.

And the RMR crew missed that particular boat completely. And quite unsurprisingly so. Their latest piece, Carrion Movements, turned out to be an instrumental concoction and was thus brutally ignored. Rulez are to be obeyed after all!

Confusion reigned. Truly. In 2021, Evadne released The Pale Light of Fireflies. A record, which – at that time – didn’t make the cut over at the RMR review desk. If our mutual memory is correct, it was the strange choices of the band when to metal and when not that held us back from coverage.

Steven Wilson‘s 2023 piece, The Harmony Codex, didn’t quite work for us. And that came as a shock to some of the RMR crew over here. Because even the feisty and pop-laden The Future Bites managed to get into our good graces, and for cause. But it also garnered a lament of Wilson and others turning their mutual backs on prog.

Hmm. 2024 turned dark and daemonic to the point that the RMR top 10 (almost) reached the glowing bottom of the occult pit. Now, early views of records on offer in 2025 seem to show a propensity toward the avantgarde. Stuffed with material that’s mighty difficult to classify and review. A redefinition of the term out-of-the-box if there ever was one.
