Whoa, folks! Rendition in Dystopia right here in a video. Pain and suffering in dirty cellars, complete with waterboarding. That’s what Final Coil’s latest clip Chemtrails depicts. The band landed one hardened metal blow that I didn’t quite expect from an outfit with an out-of-the-box yet refined style of Alternative and Progressive Rock and Metal.
Somnambulant II, the ghostly rendering of olde songs, placed Final Coil firmly on our radar. And now they’re gearing up to release their new record The World We Inherited in early ’24. So, here they are with a clip that didn’t quite click with the RMR crew at first, but made us backpedal for a closer look. And for cause.
The simple structure of the song hides some damn heavy chugging, meaty riffs, and a pounding bass that meet the wild and manic stick treatment of the Drummer Vrom Hell. The man with the mask that strangely reminded me of a Prometheus-ish1 alien space helmet. Phil Stiles‘ merciless holler nicely fits into this already somewhat sinister atmosphere.
Because, the cinematography is dark and ominous – and starkly brutal. A top notch rendition of a disquieting, evil, and eerie environment where violence is always hinted but never shown outright.2 And we hear that the clip was shot under difficult conditions in the cold and dirt. And it shows, Chemtrails sports a foreboding sense of dread with a whiff of reality.
Kudos. And now we can’t wait to get our hands on their new record.

Despite the conditions (and it was sooooooo cold lying on the floor being covered in water for a shot that was not even included in the video), we had a blast filming this clip. Thanks so much for the great write up.
You bet.
