May Misery Befall You!
Perpetual Paradox‘s magnanimous yell and title of their newest EP is quite the opener. Well, fuck you, too. And you’re welcome.
But let’s them differences not grow into an issue, shall we? Instead, let the music talk to us first. And that’s where Metalcore’s bread is buttered. Or is it the technical part that we’re picking up? I reckon it is both. But it is also the blind rage screaming at you, backed by some boundless energy that hijacked our attention first.
In essence, you’re getting a combo of Brutal and Technical Death Metal, Metalcore, ending in that terrible term called Groove Metal. In other words, Perpetual Paradox serve you with a mix of Lamb of God without that Nu Metal thing, the new gyrations of Stortregn, and Aeons with benefits. And the RMR crew’s even forgiving them the boy band part. Because even that is exceedingly well integrated into the overall hullabaloo.
But I reckon what really sold us is that uneasy marriage of a miasma fueled by abject brutality and outstanding musical prowess. For example, May Misery Befall You contains intertwined guitar harmonies. Meaning, that both guitarists – Oliver Miles and Jorge Nunes – work as a tag team. Action that we don’t see all that often. This, of course, apart from the usual angry riff work and technical geekery up there with the masters of the trade. Then we’d commend Adrian Caucelo on the virulent vocal attack track when ‘core is at hand, which is elastic enough to handle the often delicious breakdowns into Brutal Death Metal or to switch into soft croons all of a sudden.
In short, May Misery Befall You contains no shortage of grim and furious surprises that coalesce into an astonishing amalgamation of styles. Brutal, yet smooth. So, ye olde bands of the groove train, pay attention. There are young guns on the block.
And they are hungry.
