Long time no hear, sez I. After their take on Frankenstein (or Franckensteina) left the gate, Carach Angren kinda disappeared from sight. A few deep knocks here and there, but nothing to write home to the Dark Lord about.
So, here they suddenly appeared on our radar with a thunderclap of a clip called Ik Kom Uit Het Graf. Meaning, ‘I come from the grave’, courtesy of infamous translators available on the wide interweb. And I never knew that Dutch could sound so menacing.
The track itself is a raspy malevolent rant taken from the band’s upcoming EP The Cult of Kariba. A pretty basic tune that’s nonetheless a masterclass of the rhythm section. Kind of akin to what Heilung usually does to drums and other bones. Only this time it comes against a setting of truly vile blends of Alternative and Black Metal. This – object will sound like armageddon on steroids on stage, the return of the undead this side of Transylvania. ‘Tis truly merciless fare. Just thinking about what the band can do to those big wardrums when performing live makes me shudder. Stay tuned for feisty stage performances, I guess.
But, we’re not here to speculate about future eardrum destruction. Instead, let’s focus on the clip. The cinematography is as simplistic as it is terrifying. A lone and (presumably) undead zombie woman dragging a clock about busy streets. The video was shot in Belgrade, Serbia. Somewhere around the Boulevar Despota Stefana. You know, the artery named after a despot and known for its darkly ominous nightclub located in an old slaughterhouse. How very fitting, right? I really got a kick out of innocent bystanders catching a glimpse of the shoot. Genuine horror and disbelief, not knowing if this is real or staged. It is always those simple moves that create the most unease and terror. And all of that culminates in the revenant from the grave devouring its own – rejection?
Oh boy. Gruesome greetings from the dregs of your sick subconscious. Or something. In short, this is one of the best mini horror movies we’ve witnessed so far. This beats Constantine in a few sick ways. And it wasn’t a comfortable experience, but fucking great anyway.
Carach Angren are back with a vengeance. Ik Kom Uit Het Graf. Truly so.
