Well, Loki and his fucking minions must be laughing. It’s a true cosmic joke. In 2022, the RMR crew roamed the global videoscape from harsh to soft rock, over folk to the worst ideas metal could think of. But the pickings were scarce, even if our top 3 finally coughed up some pretty snazzy gems.
And now, well into 2023, Ren roars onto our radar with this tasty video called Hi Ren. And this clip would have had the chops to waltz straight to the top. Would. Because here we are, game’s over for 2022, and the lists are already written.
Ren gets us a real surprise with a story of a split personality – the devil and me, that kind of thing. And this darkly ominous mountain of emotions comes with a juicy psychedelic rap that rivals old hands like Eminem in their prime. Brought about with a simple battered acoustic guitar against a backdrop of a run-down asylum.
This grim tale shines with frugal and starkly barebone cinematography that consists pretty much of a dirty dilapidated room and some weird light show from hell. And in the midst of all that expertly arranged depression, Ren rants lustily away together with his inner demons in drab madhouse drag. But it’s the passionate, authentic, and thunderous messaging together with this sober and almost nihilistic setting that really sold us. This is one artfully powerful performance right here.
