I recently searched for some real filthy metal. Something to soothe my tortured soul for a day or so. A metallic atrocity from the 12th circle of hell, something dirty and not from this side of purgatory.

Nirvana – Bleach (1989) – Review

In a way, this is the review I never wanted to do. Bleach, Nirvana‘s starter kit, has no great allure and was never able to really convince me. Too bare bone in structure1, totally scratchy and with a somewhat unfinished varnish.

You see, Nirvana and me, we go way back and this anti-fanboy opinion of that first record is well-founded in all sorts of empirics. Wow, Haken must have the mother of all crystal balls. Ever since we learned of the inception of their new record, the chosen name Virus has been slightly disturbing to us. But this took on a whole new meaning once the Coronavirus pandemic wrecked our lives, a very dark and ominous one. A story studded with lyrics that are way too prophetic than they ever should be. But eerie as this may be, there’s no connection to the current crisis. Even if some of the statements found sound way too close to the current situation.

Who would have thought that the RMR crew will cover the German metal band Varg one day? The ones from Bavaria, by the way. So, this is neither about their namesake from Freiburg nor about one Louis Cachet1 and his misdeeds in infamy.

Often caught in a whirlpool of some strange meandering brand of Metalcore2, Varg‘s former offerings never quite managed to convince the RMR crew.
