Dimmu Borgir truly is one of the veterans in the realm of Symphonic Black Metal and – for sure – Black Metal proper. As the lore goes, the band started operations in 1993, releasing records at a steady pace. Alas, the dispatch of records slowed to a trickle in the meantime, with the band taking some 8 years between major releases. Does this mean there’s an energy drop by the two faithful acolytes, Shagrath and Silenoz? Perhaps. But, remarkably, the two remaining founding members are still at it today.

I am fascinated. Dimmu Borgir was last heard of when Eonian hit our zine – in 2018. Since then, the RMR Record Detection Squad found no sign of these Norwegians on our mighty radar screen. And it’s not that they weren’t busy. Live albums, compilations, singles, it all continued to appear. Gotta make money for Nuclear Blast’s cavernous coffers. But then, that may just be an erroneous perception on our side. Who knows, right?

There was a time when the purists and die-hard adepts would have burned them disks on heaps of flaming plastic. Like those churches, they liked to torch in Norway. We talk about those records that emanated from bands that stepped away from the pure path of flaming, spiked, and red-hot Black Metal.

Those that reduced themselves to screamy bombast and loads of make-up. Cradle of Filth come to mind. Even if Dani Filth and his merry warriors are adamant that they are no Black Metal band no more. But still, this is pure blasphemy to the goat!
