Forebode, an Essai by Saille!

Saille - Forebode - Album Cover

It has been a while. Saille was seen last on this zine in 2021 with their pretty snazzy piece, V. A true creature of the metal underground that took this crew by storm. But since then? Nada. The silence of the lambs. The lightbringer probably took a break from feeding this gang of acolytes with fodder for the evil and depraved. Or, maybe, he was busy elsewhere in the world with some Grand Mal of power politics. You fill in the blanks.

Fast forward to 2026, and they’re back on our mighty radar. Now signed to Non Serviam Records, the band surges forth with Forebode. A shorty of a blurb trying to masquerade as a full-length record. So, will it indeed be short, but brutal, or just brutally short with much ado about nothing? Strap in, this could get rough.

And before you cry foul, that Forebode ain’t short at 52 minutes of airtime, let me set the record straight. After five years of playing the incarnation of the pitch-black, empty void, Saille here produced all but four original tracks. And out of said four tracks, one of them is some sort of an interlude of a mere 57 seconds. Go figure, right? That leaves us with roughly 20 minutes of original Black Metal. In turn, this means the band had material for a good EP and filled the remaining 32 minutes of the disk with more or less revamped bonus tracks and a bunch of live recordings. And damn straight, the RMR Review Desk wasn’t amused with what they found here. Take all the time you need with that.

Yet, the original material indeed follows Saille‘s credo to return to their somewhat barebones roots. Black Metal writ large with a rather subdued melodic streak. A deliciously brutal gaggle of tracks somewhat akin in style to French Black Metal à la Corpus Diavolis or – to a lesser extent – Seth. The first track, Deception of Decadence, pretty much embodies the essence of their new (old) style. Black Metal with a menacing air, just the way we like it. This one comes with an excellent clip that we, unfortunately, didn’t detect before to give it separate coverage. The remaining two tracks of some substance, Cycle of Cynicism and Reminiscence of Regrets, pretty much follow in the same darkly juicy vein. In other words, Saille still have it in them to get us good to great material that used to dazzle us in former recordings.

As to the rest, the RMR crew enjoyed the revisited, and somewhat baroquely-structured tracks such as Haunter of the Dark 2025 or Eater of Worlds, hitting our turntable in a classical setting. Both of them stem from former records from felt eons ago.

So, if an insanely extended EP like that one is an indicator of new things to grace our roster in the future, we’re all ears. The new material on Forebode sounds crisp and fresh, delivered with a lot of blackened gusto and attention to detail. And that is what we’re looking for.

Have at it, Saille.
