Ha! Who ever said that Power Metal needs to be cheesy and sweetish? It doesn’t. And if you need proof, head over to the Brazilians of Rage In My Eyes. They’re peddling a refreshing version of the somewhat time-worn and Kiske-infested1) genre that many a metal fan has given up on.
Yet here, the band hit the RMR review pipe with Spiral, their newest EP. In actual fact, they’re playing a mix of Heavy Metal of the likes of Hibria or Thy Row and the Southern Power Metal brand that bands like Arrayan Path2) do (or did) so well.
And it’s not one of those lazy EPs either. From typical South American melancholy, over proggish chugging, to speedy Heavy and Power Metal, you got it all. And they even throw in a ballad that ain’t no overflowing fondue pot either. Boy, we’ll even forgive them the thunder-laden intro that fits right in.
Though I confess, for one wild moment, I truly thought that the long-defunct Aventura would hit the track with some bachata once the intro led off. Luckily that wasn’t the case, and the RMR deckhands were greeted with some red-hot metal shortly thereafter.
Ultimately, it takes superior musical prowess and an in-depth understanding of the genres they serve to pull off a short blurb full of different styles at such a high level of quality. So, here’s to Spiral, a tribute to heavy music the way it’s supposed to be played.
