Ah, yes. The Hour of the Wolf, or more precisely, The Wolf’s Hour. Did Ereb Altor here decide to name their newest record after a ’68 horror film by Ingmar Bergman? Maybe so, or perhaps not. Well, whatever it may be, Vargtimman feels like a logical progression to its predecessor Järtecken.

The latter already sported material that was less focused on the age-old Bathory material. And it drifted more towards a somewhat atmospheric arena, away from the austere origins of the band.

Sometimes the assault feels overwhelming. That’s when those Extreme Metal bands try to not only throw the kitchen sink at you but the whole friggin’ homestead. Suddenly, you got yourself a giant sonic Chinese Wall of Sound roaring mercilessly towards yer sorry ass. One that will threaten to swallow you whole. A noisy metal tsunami of sorts.

See, it is indeed possible. You can write a complex metal tune without building brick walls so high that you won’t hear yourself anymore. And it can be done with a hike to the epic mountain top without firing up the mighty cheese machine, too. 

Speaking of which: Here is a contender to metal fame that renders Amon Amarth and their Viking friends awfully cheesy.
