Katatonia graced our zine in 2023 only as part of an effort to acknowledge the metal mainstream a bit better. Thus, Sky Void of Stars fell victim to our first lamestream n00b listing, and the RMR crew wasn’t quite impressed. Meaning, if you’re not a fan, you’re looking at things differently. Not that our cold, hard gaze at one of metal’s most established bands changed any diehard fans’ pre-established convictions. But given the hype and roar surrounding the act, one would expect bigger and better sounds to hit our turntables.

Ha! I got ya, didn’t I? Negative headlines indeed create clicks. You thought this was all about miserable underground bands nobody ever heard of. Snazzy ranting destroying the month-long efforts those outfits put in to eke out a living. Right? RIGHT?

Nope, it isn’t. Much to the contrary, this is all about established metal bands that the RMR Review Desk shamefully ignored for all those years. You know, because – mainstream. It’s interesting, isn’t it? Many bands of renown never made it onto the famed RMR review pipe. One reason might be that we tend to favor the underground. Those vile creatures of the mucky metal Middle Earth, slithering around in the oily dark corners of our crusty pipeline. Just to be pulled out screaming into the light to sometimes spectacular effects.
