Sometimes I wonder why a record selected for review suddenly doesn’t sound right anymore. Okay, the selection process is swift and brutal – but more often than not right on point. One should get the gist of any piece in a few minutes after all.

And yet. Some of them suddenly won’t fit anymore. It’s a bit like some rough wine, still too young to easily slide down yer gullet. And that happened to Verikalpa‘s Tuomio. This is going to be the week of Heavy and Power Metal. And it’s true, the RMR crew truly is a sucker for these two genres. So, we’re all ears whenever there’s a chance for another band braving these overwrought styles’ boundaries. It’s been a while. A few years back the RMR crew covered Dream Evil‘s old 2004 piece The Book of Heavy Metal, a record that felt like some insanely powerful metal parody. Very – and I mean very – intense and so full of clichés it almost hurt. On the other hand, the thing also was equally insanely enjoyable. A fun record that ran for weeks on our music machine.

Ah, we got ourselves another one. 2024 seems to be the year of early metal and gritty rock that wafts straight up from the ’80s. New interpretations from bands who should know better than to rehash the past. But then, I’ve seen many a youngster embrace the olden and golden times of young Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. And those are people I know personally, not some odd acquaintances on Social Media. So, these ‘young’ bands embracing old-style rock ‘n’ roll may be on to something after all.
