Forest Metal didn’t fill the RMR crew with praise in 2025. You know, those bands dwelling mainly in the Bavarian and Austrian woodlands. Thorondir kind of made it over the threshold, albeit just barely. But Waldgeflüster got lost in the jungle of their own thoughts and emotions. And – in turn – then lost us. High expectations brutally squashed, that kind of thing.

Remakes only sparsely grace our review pipe. There must be a couple at best, and that’s for good reason. Usually, the RMR crew prefers the raw material, the stuff that came before, the real thing. And not some crazy-ass remix with – Loki forbid – some atrocious synth-pop elements added for fun. You get all kinds, y’know, and not everything is pretty.

Whoa, sometimes one doesn’t see the forest for the trees. The insane rush towards moar full-length reviews often lets us forget that other gems might be lurking in plain sight.

And sure enough. Not that long ago, RMR covered Ellende‘s Ellenbogengesellschaft, a perfect specimen of what we call Forest Metal over here. Abschied,1 one of the main contributions on the record spawned a pretty snazzy video that somehow got lost in the fray, until now.

Behold. The RMR crew finds itself back with that vibrant pool of excellent metal bands found around Germany and Austria. And we – of course – already drank deeply from that dark well of vile Extreme Metal that seems to spring forth from the tortured souls in those lands.

Now, some of the most exciting specimens originate from the Black Forest and – specifically – in the area around Bavaria and the greater swathes of the Austrian heartland. So, it seems like those dark valleys, somber forests, wild streams, and often magic sights inspire the doomy, atmospheric folks most.
