Ellende – Zerfall (2026) – Review

Forest Metal didn’t fill the RMR crew with praise in 2025. You know, those bands dwelling mainly in the Bavarian and Austrian woodlands. Thorondir kind of made it over the threshold, albeit just barely. But Waldgeflüster got lost in the jungle of their own thoughts and emotions. And – in turn – then lost us. High expectations brutally squashed, that kind of thing.

But hey, never give up hope, right? Ellende are back with new material just when 2026 finally lurches into focus.1 If you recall, Todbringering made it onto our zine in 2024 with a remake of an … [...] Click to raid more!

Waldgeflüster – Knochengesänge (2025) – Review

Waldgeflüster - Knochengesänge Teil I & II - Album Cover

A double-tap, that’s what Waldgeflüster had in mind this time. Knochengesänge (bone chants), they called their newest piece of art. A tandem going for a whopping 109 minutes of airtime. That’s usually a no-go for this crew. But hey, the things we do for the Forest Metal gang. We just hope that they got a good compass; these are vast wooded wastes out there. They seem to inspire a ton of Extreme Metal bands that bemoan their majestic landscapes and mystical origins. And I reckon that the album art again covers the essence of where this is going pretty well already. The pagan lore still seems to be firmly entrenched in the local populace over there. And that, even if the Holy Catholic Church tried to align the region to the cranky whims of the nailed god for too many centuries. Just look at … [...] Click to raid more!

Wintersun - The Forest Seasons - Album Cover

Ah, Forest Metal. Bands like Ellende or Waldgeflüster come to mind. Of course, the aforementioned outfits feature a different, darker style than Wintersun‘s latest. But hey, foresty musings can come in many forms. And we find all of those very hard to resist. Thus, seasonal greetings from under a leafy cover. Bungle in the jungle.

Somebody mentioned that Wintersun‘s 2017 full-length album The Forest Seasons was brimming with lush soundscapes, grand atmospheres, and all kinds of green and woody things. A record so good, everybody needed a copy for posterity, or else. Others were more reserved or felt … [...] Click to raid more!
