The RMR crew likes itself a good piece of dissonance from time to time. And this April 2024, there are two of them on the menu. Kvadrat – in a subdued kind of way – and the German band Maere with their debut …And The Universe Keeps Silent.

Disconcerting and unsettling nuances lead down this thorny road usually reserved for trve metalheads who like to wallow in darkness and misery. In other words, the adepts of the light will simply faint once you hit play. There’s no happy note where this particular left-hand path’s acolytes are heading.

The RMR crew was forever mesmerized by Folkesange, Myrkur‘s 2020 piece. Full-throttle and somewhat unhinged folk, tongue-in-cheek, with that hidden evil streak that renders Ms. Bruun‘s records so alluring. And I still vibrantly remember when M hit, that excellent piece so full of controversy. Half of the extreme metal adepts were foaming at the mouth and the rest kinda careened between disbelief and adoration. All of that led to an excellent brand of filigrane yet blackened fury that the RMR crew always found alluring.

Mammuthus. That’s one helluva band name. It speaks of big-boned animals, heavy in tusks and voracious appetites. A menace and food source to early humans that desperately roamed their ice-infested hunting grounds during the last cold spell. Until some unknown event brought about their extinction a few thousand years ago, that is. The when or why nobody quite knows and opinions sharply diverge.
