The wheel of the Devil. Ha! At last, I finally uncovered a means to invoke the Lightbringer, right?

But, nope. Meant by this is the Zoetrope, also called a Daedalum. A round device with slits that create the impression of moving images once actioned.

As the lore goes, the device saw the light of day in the 1800s. Patents by several crafty bastards followed quickly, all claiming glory for themselves. So, in essence, intellectual property disputes really are nothing new.

Marche Funèbre. Ah, ’tis so decadently funeral, this Chopin thing.1 The name of the band brings classical heavy hitters to mind. Soaring melodies full of sorrow. And all that to bury one more lost soul.

So, did RMR suddenly cross those terrible waters of the river Styx and went full-bore classical? Never in life, or anywhere thereafter2.

Straight off the bat, Einderlicht‘s melancholy ways make themselves known. We were quite smitten by their knack to project doom. A sound not unlike Draconian, yet without the female touch.

Finally. Here is to a band that embarks on a journey back to the roots of darkness. Black Metal in its ’90s Scandinavian robe. A time when the genre was a serious and often seriously dangerous affair, with church burners and real psychos that bounced all over the soundscape. Burzum, early Ulver, Bathory, and others come to mind. So, what better time than a stormy winter’s day to really get going with this record.

Marko Hietala leaves Nightwish!

May we live in interesting times, right? The bad – or strange – news never stops, and we’re in for more in 2021.

Nightwish‘s Marko Hietala has decided to quit the band with immediate effect and to – in his words – “…leave public life.” It appears that during the terrible last year, he had second thoughts about his life as a musician and the music industry as a whole. Which – wisely – led him to take a time-out and leave one of the greatest Symphonic Metal bands of all time. And that is a pity.
