In 2020 we bemoaned the fact that there weren’t enough prog outfits to come forward. That good players in this embattled genre had become a dying breed with folks like Steven Wilson opting for the pop highway.1

Only to find that Haken made it to the top spot of our annual top 10 contest2. In other words, suddenly we had a choice where there was none at first. And a pretty difficult one at that, with Scardust following more or less directly on their heels.

2020 – A disappointment for Symphonic Metal?

Once the end of 2019 approached, an interesting scenario around Symphonic Metal emerged. Three biggies in the genre – Nightwish, Diabulus in Musica, and Delain – all announced a release of their newest and – hopefully – best ever concoction.

A stellar prospect that stirred up quite some excitement around the RMR deck crew over here. We started to have fever dreams of new grandeur, of a knock-out punch that would catapult this once great genre to new beginnings and old glories revisited.

The terrible and unholy year of the Dark Lord 2020 was not as fertile as last year’s harvest would suggest. The crop yielded a fair amount of pretty excellent records. Yet, most of them erred on the good to very good territory1 and did not really qualify for that coveted top 10 spot.
