2021 has been a productive year for the RMR ‘zine. Many a band out there used the times of Covid to issue one or even two records. And the outcome was often stellar. It really seems that times of crisis like this one stimulate all those artistic neurons with sometimes fantastic outcomes.

And interestingly, this year didn’t predominantly affect one style only. Instead, we were literally flooded with good and often great material in rock, folk, and – surely – metal. Rock needs to be dirty and hot, right? Absolutely, and then some. Gazillions of bands did a helluva lot of that back in the ’70s and early ’80s. You know, those riffs that sailed on an abundance of groove, fuzz, and a gluttony of wah-wah. All of that filled with laid-back notions of blues rock and psychedelic soundbites.

One could acquire that stuff on cassettes1) and vinyl that had that tendency to quickly disintegrate. And this added to this woozy scratchiness that most remember so well.

Ah, the folks with the astro-tongues are on the prowl again with All the Rage, their newest video.1) But this time, they move away from the land of the weird straight into – blasphemy and inquisition. A soundscape that the underground extremists of metal like to occupy. Or – failing that – the surface skimmers of the lore of satan and other juicy arcane bits. But those are just for show, ain’t they?

The terrible and unholy year of the Dark Lord 2020 was not as fertile as last year’s harvest would suggest. The crop yielded a fair amount of pretty excellent records. Yet, most of them erred on the good to very good territory1) and did not really qualify for that coveted top 10 spot.

After a slow start, things started to look more lively. At first, we thought that the progressive folks would pretty much deliver naught. Yet, suddenly we have a choice, and a difficult one at that.
