2021 has been a productive year for the RMR ‘zine. Many a band out there used the times of Covid to issue one or even two records. And the outcome was often stellar. It really seems that times of crisis like this one stimulate all those artistic neurons with sometimes fantastic outcomes.

And interestingly, this year didn’t predominantly affect one style only. Instead, we were literally flooded with good and often great material in rock, folk, and – surely – metal. The RMR crew loves a good progressive, alternative, psychedelic, or even experimental rock or metal piece. Because it is there that the out-of-the-box folks dwell. Those bands that won’t be bothered by the strict confines of some genres but dearly like their artistic freedom of creativity without constraints. Yet, some of these bands tend to go a bit or way too much overboard with their liberties. A fact that may or may not play in their favor.

In 2020 we bemoaned the fact that there weren’t enough prog outfits to come forward. That good players in this embattled genre had become a dying breed with folks like Steven Wilson opting for the pop highway.1)

Only to find that Haken made it to the top spot of our annual top 10 contest2). In other words, suddenly we had a choice where there was none at first. And a pretty difficult one at that, with Scardust following more or less directly on their heels.
