RockmusicRaider Newsflash - INK - Whispers of Calliope - Album Cover

You know, the RMR crew is always looking for the bands looming outside of the mainstream. Those that lurk in the murky depths of gloom by the side of the road. The bands looking for the unusual. Those who don’t give a damn where today’s undercurrents flow.

INK has been a consistent blip on our review radar in that department, for sure. Their Avantgarde-infused style prompted already a few listens of their 2016 album Loom. And for sure the RockmusicRaider deck crew wasted a few grams of black ink on that specific delight. But here and now we will talk about their 2018 offering Whispers of Calliope.

But wait, what? ‘Tis a work of covers, nothing original to be found far and wide. And covers are for weaklings, right? Well, since we stumbled across Therion‘s latest cover story, the tide somehow changed with the RMR deck crew. Covers can be done exceedingly well, all the more so if the style of the interpreter is – at the outset – already a tad eccentric and outside the beaten path.

And this is indeed the case with Whispers of Calliope. INK slammed their very unique, scratchy style on a number of vintage rock songs. In a more or less unplugged, acoustic setting that adds a lot of spice like so much aged red wine.

We really took a fancy to Hurt of Nine Inch Nails, Rebel Yell of Billy Idol, or to the juicy rendition of Like the Way I do by Melissa Etheridge. Or again, the way the band spruced up First We Take Manhattan by Leonard Cohen that just borders on the sublime.

Okay, you’ll also get your share of terrors of the realm, like Knife Party, originally from Deftones. But by and large, the RMR supreme court found the offer to be of good to great quality.

So by all means, go ahead and get yourself a slice. You’re not gonna regret it.

Here’s the tracklist with the original bands:

  • Sober (Tool)
  • In a Manner of Speaking (Tuxedomoon)
  • First We Take Manhattan (Leonard Cohen)
  • Rebel Yell (Billy Idol)
  • Like The Way I Do (Melissa Etheridge)
  • Hurt (Nine Inch Nails)
  • Disarm (Smashing Pumpkins)
  • Knife Party (Deftones)
  • Never Tear Us Apart (INXS)
  • Come Live With Me (Massive Attack)
  • Hunger Strike (Temple of the Dog)

And a video to go with the readin’.
