The RMR crew got to know Deathless Legacy when their 2018 piece Rituals of Black Magic hit our turntables. A record not without its (pretty severe) shortcomings. But they had that perfectly balanced song – Dominus Inferi – on the tracklist. And that is what finally made the cut over at the office tower. Saturnalia, the EP, improved matters some, whereas Mater Larvarum left mixed feelings behind yet again.

Steva Deathless with her powerful and smoky pipes always make us return to that particular well called Deathless Legacy. The band’s an absolute beast on stage with pretty elaborate productions. But this quality of the band – unfortunately – doesn’t always translate correctly once sound only plays. A fact that we painfully discovered on their 2018 piece Rituals of Black Magic, apart from the last track on this record that turned out to be top-notch indeed.

It is true. I had my reservations about Rituals of Black Magic, Deathless Legacy‘s last full-length album. Somehow things did not quite fit. The record tried to be a live performance on stage. And the band is known for its pretty lavish productions on stage if nothing else. Yet, this was obviously impossible if soundbites are the only thing that you have to offer.

Unholy chanting in the dark, invocations of the daemon, bodily fluids freely streaming down the altar. Oh, lusty Black Mass, where art thou? Well, we got Black Metal outfits like Riti Occulti or – again – Darkend that cover this kind of topic. And it has been covered before and will be the subject of future records, I am sure.

Then, you got those pretenders with the pig heads on stakes, pigs’ blood, and chicks on crosses. Gorgoroth comes to mind with their 2004 performance in Krakow that almost got them in touch with the Polish jailhouse rock.
