Well, hells bells, the RMR crew thought they were retired for good. Or at least retired enough to not throw yet another one of their records onto the Review Desk. The theme, fil-rouge, or storyline is an important pillar of any one great album. To choose the right one demands skill and careful attention. And it’s used as a vessel to drive a crisp narrative, to jolt the songwriting in the right direction, and to keep it snappy and brisk. And most of the time, this works out just beautifully.

When Cirith Ungol returned from the happy defunct in 2020 with a new scorcher, we were torn. Forever Black had this oldish vibe, true. This metallic gene whence great Heavy Metal records spring. Yet again, at times, the piece sailed a tad too close to the age-old tropes Judas Priest and Rainbow pursued back in the ’80s. And that – with the monotonous and screamy vocal delivery – led to some discord over at the RMR review desk. Black Sabbath are often claimed to be ground zero for all things metal and rock. The poor chaps appear to be guilty of every style and direction the metal multiverse meandered through. How on earth this might be possible, I frankly can’t fathom.

But hey, it’s always easy to state that particularly well-known band with the flamboyant Ozzy as their figurehead. They truly are – or were – dinosaurs, products of that primeval sound chaos from which today’s rock and metal emerged.
