I am not surprised that Nuclear Blast finally sponsored Monnalisa to appear on moving pictures. After all, it is one of the most publicly palatable tracks on Fleshgod Apocalypse‘s Veleno. One for the masses, if you will. If that can be said about this record at all.
But by the holy metal cow, this video took me by storm. Flawless execution on display with a storyline that holds its water from beginning to end. A Victorian tableau of hinted gruesomeness.
Monnalisa paints itself in lively pictures that whisper of forbidden fruits and deliciously gory endings. Those that can only conclude in horror and death.
The film crew really played this out to the bitter end, complete with the praying mantis that – finally – devours the head of the victim in abject insect delight. And I truly enjoyed the performance of Veronica Bordacchini. Down to the slightly evil classical interpretations and the subtle hints to The Fly and other such terrors.
In short, this video is top-notch. A depiction of a deliciously corrupt debauchery, playing to our senses and this unhealthy attraction to the hidden and unspeakable.
But now, behold, here’s to one of the best clips of 2020 so far. Monnalisa, without a happy ending. Enjoy.
