There is such a thing as the sophomore cliff for record releases. A blackened metallic rock that any new band somehow must navigate around with their second full-length record. Because failing that, they may not reach those stellar future hunting grounds that will make them stinking rich1). Yet sadly, many a band inexplicably shipwrecks on those accursed submerged reefs.

Zeit are very angry, furious actually. That’s why they decided to slam an EP onto the music market that is – for now – seriously hampered by the current pandemic. And indeed, they hail from Germany where the restrictions are especially harsh these days.

But – wait a minute – they don’t lament the current virus, other people are already doing this ad nauseam. Instead, they got us a dirge for the useless Year of the Dark Lord 2020. About all those many other dumb issues that happened then and kinda disappeared under the radar of things.

Cinematic Metal. The dream of shaving off a tasty slice of Hollywood without being there. And – by definition – only in sound and never in deed. Clad in metal that somehow and apparently must sound epic and be smothered in sweetish cheese.

Bands like AfterTime or – again – Illuminata come to mind. And for a while, it is nice to listen to those compositions that all kinda sound alike. But then suddenly this deluge of fondue does get to you. And you start to yearn for something a bit rougher.

Xaon first got on the RMR metal detection radar with their EP Face of Balaam some years back. The full length The Drift followed in 2017, which already showed tendencies of abject symphonics on a bed of crunchy metal.

Now, the band followed this up with a new record called Solipsis in 2019 that sadly escaped our review pipe until now. Well, never say never, and this reviewer may still find time to get to it until the year is out.
