Do you remember the ‘I love you / I love you not’ game? You know, the one also played with an unsuspecting flower that thus brutally meets its unseemly demise. Remember that? Good.

Because sometimes we encounter records that do exactly that. At the outset already, and we haven’t even tortured the flower yet, there seems to be no love lost (so the flower can live). Yet, one full half-hour bleeds away and this thing still roars out of our loudspeakers. And we kinda scratch our heads and ask ourselves what we’re going to do with this record. Aephanemer truly rewrote the way Melodic and Symphonic Death Metal is looked at today. The band rapidly went from unknown shredders to a known value by which the speedy factions of these genres shall be measured. Now, they are back with Panta Rhei, a first glimpse into their upcoming record A Dream of Wilderness, out in November 2021.

Usually, I am not too fond of the metal-band-in-a-cave theme with extended theatrics by hairy metal band dudes and dudettes. Yet here, first ’tis a modern cave with screens, so they’re forgiven.

By the ugly mug of the Lightbringer, we got ourselves yet another Ghost in waiting. Apostolica is a new band, out to rearrange the Power Metal landscape. But a cloudy mystique surrounds the members’ identities, as it’s their devout wish to stay incognito. Yet the label assured us that we will find – and I quote – “…some of the finest musicians of the international heavy metal scene.” Alright, then. We always like a band with a swagger.

Sometimes the assault feels overwhelming. That’s when those Extreme Metal bands try to not only throw the kitchen sink at you but the whole friggin’ homestead. Suddenly, you got yourself a giant sonic Chinese Wall of Sound roaring mercilessly towards yer sorry ass. One that will threaten to swallow you whole. A noisy metal tsunami of sorts.
