Desperation levels are rising again. So, the escape valve is – you guessed it – Anaal Nathrakh all over again. Some crazed mix of Total Fucking Necro‘s horrible grind and the terrifying musings of the widow that the Kenny / Hunt team pushes straight up your derriere.

Only that this time, we’re reaching into the past. Before the constellation thing even happened, and this is a scary thought all by itself. Vokonis have a knack. And that is to produce (or to choose) irresistible artwork. Their 2021 piece Odyssey already won the review desk over with its striking cover. Exist Within Light – the Swede’s latest blurb is no different. Visual stimulation for metal reviews? Perhaps.

Thus, their newest EP landed in our review pipe with a selection of three tracks that should – and I paraphrase – let the band further explore the depth and breadth of their offering. All of that is in view of an upcoming album planned for next year or so.

When Cirith Ungol returned from the happy defunct in 2020 with a new scorcher, we were torn. Forever Black had this oldish vibe, true. This metallic gene whence great Heavy Metal records spring. Yet again, at times, the piece sailed a tad too close to the age-old tropes Judas Priest and Rainbow pursued back in the ’80s. And that – with the monotonous and screamy vocal delivery – led to some discord over at the RMR review desk.
