RockmusicRaider Review - Summoning - Old Mornings Dawn - Album Cover Okay, I am hooked. The Austrian synthie pop Black Metal universe gets me feeling all funny inside. Especially if this talks to my benevolent Depeche Mode nerve that was long thought dead, but now tries to resurrect itself.

Seriously!

Summoning with their 2013 Old Mornings Dawn are marching down their straight Roman road to Middle Earth still after all these years. To be more precise, it is 7 long years of waiting – incidentally the critical period in any kind of relationship.

And the question here will mainly be: Who delivers the better Atmospheric Black Metal? Caladan Brood – the [...] Click to raid more!

Amorphis – Circle (2013) – Review

RockmusicRaider Review - Amorphis - Circle - Album CoverIt is the Amorphis trademark sound alright, no doubt about it. But I am still confused. Circle, the 11th studio album of Finnish metal artists Amorphis showcases its pockets of excellence very well. Actually many of them. But then also lots of elements that absolutely make no sense to me. And you just ask yourself: Quo Vadis, Amorphis?

Okay, it may very well be – as it was opined by some of my co-reviewers – that the band has been on the lookout of a different, more unique sound. Somewhat confirmed in their follow-on album Under The Red [...] Click to raid more!

Caladan Brood – Echoes of Battle (2013) – Review

RockmusicRaider - Caladan Brood Echoes of Battle - Album Cover

Looking for stellar Atmospheric Black Metal? An epic battle of forces unknown? Morrowind on steroids? The 2013 debut album Echoes of Battle of the startup Caladan Brood cuts you right down the middle, chews you up and spits you out again. Straight into the grand Epic Atmospheric Black Metal landscape they portray, mixed into this is here black magic potion.

Okay, you purists, admitted! They cruise (very, very) dangerously close to the abominable crime of copycat, sounding like Summoning in a way that is – almost exactly like them. And they indeed take the typically Chinese art of plagiarism a little far. Just look at the logo and be amazed.

Leaves’ Eyes – Symphonies of the Night (2013) – Review

RockmusicRaider Review - Leaves' Eyes - Symphonies of the Night - Album CoverWell, I will be damned! Symphonies of the Night is actually not bad at all. Still some sort of compound brand of the Symphonic Metal universe out there. But much improvement over the Norwegian/German band Leaves’ Eyes last record Njord I reviewed some time ago.

For those who have read it, the flat delivery of the last record did not impress me much. Not much substance and not much of anything else. That is why I did not even bother to have a look at their go-between Meredead from 2011, for which some of my co-conspirators had some serious [...] Click to raid more!
