Somebody famously opined that Haken‘s Fauna somehow flew under the radar for many reviewers in 2023. And there may be some truth to this. Or is there?

After masterpieces like Virus that made it straight to the top of our 2020 Top 10 or sturdy records like The Mountain with their Cockroach King, it will be a difficult climb for any new piece to reach those lofty heights. And I daresay, these olde albums still resonate with the RMR crew to this day.

No dice! That was the very first verdict on Convocation‘s No Dawn for the Caliginous Night. The record bounced off the RMR review desk like those terse one-line rulings the Supreme Court likes to issue. And this probably was a knee-jerk reaction, some sort of overdose of too much Raise to the Sky and Shores of Null.

But then – luckily – came the inevitable ‘wait a minute’. A welcome moment of reason. The roaring doomy soundscapes, the spectacular atmosphere, and the overall artistic delivery of No Dawn just cannot be missed after all.

Death of Giants‘ Ventesorg got banned back into the waiting loop earlier in 2023. Not because the record lacked in quality, but because the time wasn’t right for yet another emotional rollercoaster back in May. You see, the RMR crew indeed covered records dealing with psychological trauma in the past – and that avalanche of raw emotion always hit us at some level. So, the time must be ripe for such a piece. And now is a good time to get going with those bleak and cold rainstorms rushing by.

The 2015 record In the Shadow of the Inverted Cross immediately got our full attention. The release marked the moment when Sorcerer finally came out of hibernation for real. After five years of trying to decide what they wanted to become since 2010, the year of resurrection of the band after a long time of stop ‘n’ go and deep freeze. And that record restarted their metal machinations with a friggin’ thunderclap.
