I never thought we would cover Leprous ever again. After all, Einar Solberg took his almost picture-perfect prog act down a windy road of whiny, high-pitched, and soft-balled tunes. Suddenly, the progressive cojones went missing and the outcome wasn’t something we could stomach for more than five minutes at a time. But wait, what? This ain’t Solberg?

Steven Wilson‘s 2023 piece, The Harmony Codex, didn’t quite work for us. And that came as a shock to some of the RMR crew over here. Because even the feisty and pop-laden The Future Bites managed to get into our good graces, and for cause. But it also garnered a lament of Wilson and others turning their mutual backs on prog.

I found a new genre. Sublime Progressive Rock is its name and Nebula Nine adorned themselves with it. Already the word ‘sublime’ should melt on your tongue like that Café de Paris served on a perfect steak in a French 5-star eatery. Dreams of otherworldly rock delights that will surely dethrone the long-defunct Genesis of times long gone. Or others, such as Yes, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, King Crimson, the list goes on and on. Dawnwalker record progression: Ages, 2020, 58 minutes, Black/Death/Prog/Post, all still somewhat metallic. House of Sand, 2022, 43 minutes, Post Metal, Progressive Rock, loads of ambient musings, and some psych. And lastly, this year’s The Unknowing, 38 minutes, mostly alternative and psych/prog rock, a wee bit of hidden ambients, and a few Post Metal moments. Interesting, isn’t it?
