I never thought we would cover Leprous ever again. After all, Einar Solberg took his almost picture-perfect prog act down a windy road of whiny, high-pitched, and soft-balled tunes. Suddenly, the progressive cojones went missing and the outcome wasn’t something we could stomach for more than five minutes at a time. But wait, what? This ain’t Solberg?

These funky instances are few and far between. Sometimes one just spots them. New artists sporting insane talent, way out there beyond the beaten track. And their work just hooks you straight away. It’s a bit like the devil and your dark soul. As a reviewer, you won’t get away from it until you wrote yer piece. Or there won’t be peace – of mind or otherwise.

Pretty much one year ago, Rioghan appeared on our radar with her 2021 blurb Blackened Sky. The RMR crew was greatly impressed by the insane talent on display from someone so young. So, our valiant scouts kept a sturdy lookout for that first album that certainly should drop at some point.

And indeed, Different Kinds Of Losses has been announced for later in 2022.1 This is splendid news. Apart from the apparent involvement of one Einar Solberg, whose new-found style clearly didn’t garner any brownie points over here.2 At all. Well, by the Holy Metal Fucking Cow, I am fascinated. Or more, mesmerized.

Word reached us a short while ago about Rioghan, a new artist on the Finnish music scene. Finland and Scandinavia in general are tough terrains to be on for emerging musicians. A great multitude of famous bands rose to global fame from the North of Europe. Don’t know why, it must be the water. Or – maybe – the eternal darkness does that to them. We’ll never know for sure.
