Now that’s funky. The RMR crew just wasted some ink on Animae Haeretica, Apostolica’s latest Power Metal record. Thus, confusion reigned in our office suite when the band Anima Hereticae dropped their very own Extreme Metal record Descended from the Mountains with the same release date.

Oh boy. This is either one of Loki’s cosmic jokes or we got ourselves the evil twin from the adepts of the Metal o’ Darkness. Or is the apparent name-dropping just pure coincidence? Let’s find out.

Already a glance at the album cover piqued our interest to explore this one further. A wispy white figure on a black horse painted in pseudo-impressionist undertones and a band logo emerging straight from the woods. Meaning, if I would not know what it says, I’d never guess. That metal joke never gets old, doesn’t it? And then they called their band Mental Cruelty, which – come to think of it – may well be indicative of their metal style.

Ah, Forest Metal. Bands like Ellende or Waldgeflüster come to mind. Of course, the aforementioned outfits feature a different, darker style than Wintersun‘s latest. But hey, foresty musings can come in many forms. And we find all of those very hard to resist. Thus, seasonal greetings from under a leafy cover. Bungle in the jungle.

Somebody mentioned that Wintersun‘s 2017 full-length album The Forest Seasons was brimming with lush soundscapes, grand atmospheres, and all kinds of green and woody things. Don’t I just love everything involving Lovecraft?

A brilliant horror fiction writer in his own way back at the beginning of the last century. He released materials that still find a large fan base to this day.
