The conflicted and neverending tale of Batushka is on our mutual minds yet again. Exactly. None other than these guys. This here crew covered the machinations around this act until around the end of 2019. That was the time when both accusers headed to court in earnest. And boy, do the legal mills run slowly back in Poland. It has taken both iterations of Batushka and their angry, fearless leaders eons to find some closure. If one can call that closure at all, that is.

Ah yes, Batushka. The never-ending saga of a deal gone sour. Two former partners that peck at each other like angry cocks. And that, from one of the most promising Black Metal outfits.

Now, some time ago, the crew over here decided to cover both parties. And I’m afraid that the 2019 record Hospodi did not necessarily get great grades in the process. Aggressive it was, true. But the band around Bartłomiej Krysiuk presented a tune so generic it was neither here nor there.

What a sad pickle.

At the very end of 2015, RockmusicRaider covered this unknown band called Batushka. A new star on the Black Metal horizon serving us Litourgyia on a platter of mightily sepulchral orthodox chanting.

Apparently from Poland, but very secretive at first, they unloaded their unholy wares on the unsuspecting metal crowd. With an unprecedented success to boot. Specialists and critics gushed over the record as if there was no tomorrow. Finally, a band emerged that could slake that blinding thirst for some real Black Metal in a dry desert populated by posers and wannabe satanists.

The RMR blog covered the on-going Batushka controversy pretty closely so far. For those who were out of the loop for a while, here’s a quick rundown.

At first, we had a stellar Black Metal album – Litourgyia – that took the genre by storm. It led to a pretty fulminant success of a previously unknown band from Poland.
