You know, some time ago we covered a band that somewhat overdid it in so many ways. One part of their sins was a totally overwrought interpretation of Death Metal. The RMR crew opined at that time that we occasionally love ourselves a good gurgle. But – of course – this must be done with mastery or all that phlegm-filled depravity will not be worth it. And since that time we scouted the vast Death Metal universe for just THAT band.

What about – some Brutal Death Metal lost in translation with Technical Death Metal? You know, extreme ferocity that won’t change its attack vector until you either fled or were trampled by the horde. It depends, I guess. On the day and the level of rage that the Dark Lord delivers. Because fury is what you need once Orphalis‘ newest As The Ashes Settle unleashes its wares on your sorry bones.

Already a glance at the album cover piqued our interest to explore this one further. A wispy white figure on a black horse painted in pseudo-impressionist undertones and a band logo emerging straight from the woods. Meaning, if I would not know what it says, I’d never guess. That metal joke never gets old, doesn’t it? And then they called their band Mental Cruelty, which – come to think of it – may well be indicative of their metal style.
