The purple squad is on the prowl again. Sludgy, fuzzy, stonerized slow marching metal that will engulf you with a syrupy, sticky flow. And we had them on RMR already. Pieces from Mammuthus or Purple Dawn come to mind.

And they all have something in common: Their album art is all colored in purple. A calling card, if you will. Okay, I confess. I am a sucker for great album covers. And Vokonis‘ new piece Odyssey just made me pick up that record by the sheer force of its art. A bird that is about to be swallowed by THE VORTEX1 with ethereal floating cities as companions? It’s as psychedelic as they come. And we loved every pixel of it.

When things get experimental, this crew gets worried. The RMR deckhands already had their fair share of ‘great bands’ that only managed to waste our time with ill-fated projects. Those that got hailed by the eternal yeasayers to nirvana and back, defended by a small gang of loudmouth fans.

Some picture themselves as the archetype of the avant-garde, those that dare face the brave new world that will emerge after all those pandemics and miscellaneous tribulations changed everything. So much so, that we now must embrace the useless and the atrocious. Because someone said so.1

I recently searched for some real filthy metal. Something to soothe my tortured soul for a day or so. A metallic atrocity from the 12th circle of hell, something dirty and not from this side of purgatory.
