A few months after the RockmusicRaider blog really took off, Draconian‘s Sovran happened. This is probably THE record that shaped our take on Doom and Gothic Metal in any significant way. And way more than their famous brethren Paradise Lost or My Dying Bride ever would.

Chiefly, Sovran impressed us with this sludgy heaviness. This sepulchral march towards the ultimate state of sadness. Something that immediately connects with your inner sorrow. It is wintertime again. Well, not quite yet, but we are almost there. And it is definitely cold enough for my thin blood running in my veins. The countryside gets more desolate by the day with murky light and fog everywhere. The weather pelting you with rain, sleet, and snow at Thor’s whim. And you ask yourself: Whatever happened to Freyr and his sunny ways?

Scandinavia seems to be an endless source of all things metal. This time we get it from Sweden, where I thought only the happy blonde bombshells dwell – but not so. The 6th studio album Sovran from Draconian is – at its base – real Doom Metal. 

A powerful brand of Doom wanting to ice the bones in your body, and pound you crying into the dust with a deluge of sadness and tribulations.
