Why is it that we always like to return to known values? Some of it is – I guess – the doubtful comfort of familiarity. Soundscapes that come with a set of rulez that were painted in hellish runes on blackened walls eons ago.

Visions of burning churches, sweaty halls filled with screaming fans that are egged on by hairy beasts with corpse paint on their faces. With rasped messages howled at them in often intelligible growls. All of that comes with that whiff of the unknown, hints of the underworld suddenly visible on stage. One thing is certain. The folks over at Bewitcher like to keep their metal wares short, crisp, and razor-sharp. Already their 2021 piece Cursed be Thy Kingdom soothed our cold metal hearts with that sort of speedy fare that seems to spew forth straight from the times NWoBHM was a thing. And it came at a relatively short runtime that won’t damage yer attention span.

The RMR deck crew has recently taken a fancy to the styleless masses of the metal multiverse. Outfits that moved away from the (self-imposed) conventions and narrow rulez of genres that shouldn’t even exist. Bands that impress us with non-melody, completely out there in the fever swamps of dronish imagination. Or others that just gallivant around the soundscape the way they see fit. And sometimes it is not even metal the way ‘it is meant to be’.

When things get experimental, this crew gets worried. The RMR deckhands already had their fair share of ‘great bands’ that only managed to waste our time with ill-fated projects. Those that got hailed by the eternal yeasayers to nirvana and back, defended by a small gang of loudmouth fans.

Some picture themselves as the archetype of the avant-garde, those that dare face the brave new world that will emerge after all those pandemics and miscellaneous tribulations changed everything. So much so, that we now must embrace the useless and the atrocious. Because someone said so.1
