Some six years ago, Iron Maiden hit us with The Book of Souls. A 92-minute behemoth that – at first – we had some trouble wrapping our heads around. And in truth, the piece almost ended up in the oubliette somewhere. Yet, it nonetheless garnered an incredibly high score back then, which made modern RMR scratch his head in dismayed confusion.

You gotta be in the mood for that one. There are swampy creatures out there that – for once – don’t originate from Capitol Hill. Instead, they hail from some bog in good ol’ England. Meet Slimelord and their newest demo turned EP called Moss Contamination.

The RMR crew here was on the lookout for some real Death Metal, away from the weak gurgles some bands sport and sell it as the trve deathly fare. Ah, Power Metal. Over time, the RMR deckhands developed some sort of affinity for the often overblown themes that the genre peddles for yer listening pleasure. Any fantasy will do in there, and that’s perfectly fine. And you get them all, from the sillybones, over the cheesecakes, to truly remarkable pieces.

Albeit that you need to be constantly on your guard to avoid slipping in those fondue puddles. Or you risk getting stuck in syrupy sugary sweetness that will make any stevia plant taste bitter. But that goes with the territory.

There is such a thing as the sophomore cliff for record releases. A blackened metallic rock that any new band somehow must navigate around with their second full-length record. Because failing that, they may not reach those stellar future hunting grounds that will make them stinking rich1. Yet sadly, many a band inexplicably shipwrecks on those accursed submerged reefs.
