It’s the bleak album cover that made it happen. The successful arrival of Inver‘s debut album On This Earth at our review pipe’s doorstep, that is. And – I guess – the fact that the record aired mid-January when everything is should be frozen helped a bit, too. Melancholy galore, no end in sight for the ceaseless wintery depression. So, we got ourselves fertile grounds for doomy musings on sunless days, one would think.

Ah, the RMR crew is wallowing a lot in Celtic mystique this early 2024. This time it is Drunemeton and their invocation of Tir Nan Og that got our fancy. A theme hinting at the famed pagan otherwordly island paradise, a haven endowed with everlasting youth, beauty, health, abundance, and joy. A place where humans can visit at their own perils only. Because, if you’re not immortal, you’ll pay the price later.

2023 boasts a pretty good crop of all things Power Metal. This is a trend that the RMR crew has already observed since the beginning of last year. From veiled madness to frozen objects, refreshing PM geekery provided us with hours of freshly grated cheese and boundless sugar-filled energy.

The theme, fil-rouge, or storyline is an important pillar of any one great album. To choose the right one demands skill and careful attention. And it’s used as a vessel to drive a crisp narrative, to jolt the songwriting in the right direction, and to keep it snappy and brisk. And most of the time, this works out just beautifully.
