It is true. The RMR blog did post pretty critical coverage of Leprous‘ latest deliveries. And for cause, with Malina really taking the plunge in 2017.

Over the last years, the band with Einar Solberg at the helm, moved ever farther down into the sugary abyss other bands already shipwrecked in. And away from a once strong prog metal performance. Now, as the new release came closer, we got bits and pieces that indicated a new era approaching. For Leprous.

Shock and awe. You might remember that one. It is a (very old) military strategy, last used prominently by the US in the latest Iraq war.

One that aims at shell-shocking the enemy into submission with a tremendous load of boom and bang. With the hope that the evil witch will lose her favorite broom AND her spells, forget to recover, and just give up the ghost. So that this contentious and ugly conquering business turns out to be much less difficult and costly than it would otherwise be.

I now have seen Dirty Sound Magnet live twice. The first time around in 2014, promoting their flagship What Lies Behind. That was back in their old incarnation, a time when they sported Zep-fueled tunes on a bed of crunchy rock.

This time they got my attention right this week at the Rock Oz’Arènes festival in Avenches, the old Roman stronghold in Switzerland.

And boy did things change.
