RockmusicRaider Review - Myrkur - Myrkur - Album CoverThou shalt not review old records, because it is a waste of your life energy! The 11th Commandment of a review blog. Right? But rulez are there to be broken – at least sometimes. So, let’s have a look at what was, before M graced us with its unholy presence. And yes, we will harken back in time to the beginnings of Myrkur and their self-titled EP. You heard that right. The very same band, who earlier last year – in 2015 – roughed up the Black Metal world real good. And she did that so well, Myrkur ended up at the top spot of RockmusicRaider’s 2015 Top Ten Records.

Myrkur was already a big hype back in 2014!

At that time, nobody quite knew who was behind this supposedly female-led Black Metal act. This was – by the way – a pretty stiff marketing ploy orchestrated by Relapse Records. And in line with many of these elusive Black Metal outfits out there, playing fucking mystery-man hide-and-seek for a living.  [...]  Got hooked? 2015 Top 10 Records

RockmusicRaider Review - Amalie Bruun - GuitarThe first full year for RockmusicRaider went by and a great many records were reviewed. A wild ride it was and still is, with challenges galore, some overcome and some still lurking nearby. This list covers records that got released in 2015. And who would have thought that the black section of #metal would be getting such attention during this year. Certainly not me. I am looking forward to a even more eventful 2016 and the pipeline does look pretty much filled already – but this is only the beginning.

So, let’s step right in:

RockmusicRaider Review - Finsterforst - Mach dich Frei - Album Cover#10 – Finsterforst – Mach Dich Frei

Talk about crunch, this is very powerful stuff. The boys from the Black Forest (the modern denomination of Finsterforst) in Germany just hit you over the head with some sort of Forest Death Metal of the folksy kind. Mach Dich Frei is probably the best record they released so far and the title song is just captivating. I really enjoyed the record as a whole – crystal clear, brutal and just good. The lyrics are all in German, but they enjoy communicating in English. Go figure. Whatever the language you speak, however, this record should be worth at least a listen. As I said above, powerful stuff. [...]  Got hooked? Raid on...!

Myrkur – M (2015) – Review

RockmusicRaider Review - Myrkur - M - Album CoverYou are a metal fan, right? That is why you are here. Right? So, have you ever tried to listen to Enya? Yes, the one of the surreal, kind of weird, ethereal melodies and soft tunes. Not #metal at all, y’know. Now: Mix three parts of Enya with a shot of Caladan Brood, together with 2 parts of Cradle of Filth on steroids (meaning: Dani Filth’s annoying screams amplified times five…). Then throw in three parts of Ulver and one psychedelic part of Suns of Thyme. And thus you get M, the latest and best of Myrkur. And no, this has nothing to do with James Bond and his 007-ish being. But horribly shaken, not terribly stirred it is indeed.

The band is actually a project of Danish one-woman multi-instrumentalist, model and pop vocalist turned #metal witch Amalie Bruun (or vice-versa…). The band released an EP in 2014, now followed by M, their first full length studio album. Interesting to see how she tries to morph from pop queen – kind of a copy of Taylor Swift – to something much more sinister. And it is this image of the blond, sweet girl going dark witch on you in a second that is strangely alluring too. Blondes have all the fun and cannot be bad, right? Well, think again. [...]  Got hooked? Raid on...!
