RockmusicRaider Review Gentle Storm The Diary - Album CoverHere I am going to hunt for once well outside my usual haunts and dark forests of yonder badlands, lost at sea – feeling like Jack Sparrow with his compass pointing nowhere. Landing back in spice trade nirvana, creaking planks and salted beef for supper. This new endeavour all started when I heard about a double-concept album called ‘The Diary’ coming out under the name of The Gentle Storm, featuring Anneke Van Giersbergen (long time ago with The Gathering, Townsend project and solo) as THE VOICE (okay, the vocalist…LOL) and Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon, Stream of Passion). And I got very excited.

With the bottomless creative reservoir of Arjen Lucassen at work for song writing and a very capable vocalist like Anneke in charge of lyrics, ’tis just gotta be good. Right? RIGHT?? And in truth, The Diary is a delight to listen to, with some slight similarities to the album Embrace the Storm of Stream of Passion 10 years earlier – but only just. Looks like they like stormy names for their productions. [...]  Got hooked? Raid on...!

RockmusicRaider’s Intermittent Best of… – Tome II

Caladan Brood - RockmusicRaider Music ReviewsIt for sure feels like a gazillion of months since I first wrote the Tome I Best of… earlier in 2015. But we are only a few months out and already a new one is due.

Eventful was the time: From flamers attacking us with comments displaying a level of stupidity I never thought possible, to full-blown hacker attacks on the site, one total breakdown of the site with subsequent reloading and salvaging the server contents. This last one was quite heavy, barely avoiding loosing months of writing.

Wondrous things were happening too: For example Anneke van Giersbergen almost jumping onto the hood of my car when crossing the road right in front of me with her family in a little town by the Lake of Geneva and poor old RockmusicRaider struck speechless, sitting dumbstruck in the car. LOL! This was just around the time when I reviewed The Diary of The Gentle Storm; one of the rare records receiving a straight 10/10 rating on the blog. As you may imagine, Anneke and Arjen Lucassen were a lot on my mind at that time. Then this; I thought I’d seen a ghost.  [...]  Got hooked? Raid on...!

Moonspell – Night Eternal (2008) – Review!

RockmusicRaider Review - Moonspell - Night Eternal - Album CoverBy Loki, the 9th studio album Night Eternal of the Portuguese band ‘Moonspell’ is hard chow. You really need to listen to this jumble of tracks a few times and apply some goodwill at first. And I mean really go for it! To take it all in IS tough – Black Metal laced Gothic Metal stuff coming out of my earphones. Brutal – technically very demanding – riffs and harsh vocals assaulting your eardrums and virtually marching through your brain (if it is not burned away – that is – after listening to this record repeatedly).

But then the vampire or the thing that dwells in the darkness inside you will wake and you start to like this harsh tune served with a metal hammer by our Southern friends. With some reservations. They do push the limits – but then again Moonspell are known to do just that and vary their tune from one album to the other. And you need to be in the mood to make do with all that screaming and growling in there.  [...]  Got hooked? Raid on...!
