Intermittent Digest – Tome VII

RockmusicRaider - Intermittent Digest - Tome VIIWhoops! Is it mid 2018 yet? It is. And thus high time to take stock again of records that excited us at RockmusicRaider since Tome VI appeared on the screens of our esteemed fans. Meantime, the deck crew issued a new Top 10 for 2017 and hammered out yet another edition of the Old’n’Tasty series.

Now, these intermittent digests are surely no top 10 list. But some of those albums might very well end up in a hall of fame or two. And the harvest of records to date is certainly surprisingly eclectic. So – fans and friends – here we go with Tome VII:

RockmusicRaider Review - Infinitas - Civitas Interitus - Album CoverWhoever said that bands in Switzerland cannot whelp good metal records? And then coming from a remote corner of this decidedly tiny country to boot. Meet Infinitas and their record Civitas Interitus. The band boasts an unusual brand of Folk Thrash Metal that they savvily mix with acoustics, real folk and instrumentals. The pretty tasty and cool mix of styles and nuances really renders it difficult to get away from the record. Until you – suddenly – reach the end. The quality of the pudding is in the eating? Rightly so – for this blog at least. Infinitas managed to appear on the 2017 Top 10 AND get a video posted in 2018. There you go. [...]  Got hooked? Raid on...!

Amorphis – Queen of Time (2018) – Review

RockmusicRaider Review - Amorphis - Queen of Time - Album CoverAye! Guilty! The first listen of Queen of Time – Amorphis‘ 2018 concoction – originated from a relatively lo-fi streaming platform. And – unsurprisingly – this first glimpse left yours truly wondering where Amorphis was headed these days. Terrible visions of Amaranthe-esque disasters, misguided Power Metal et al. But the Finns usually have been a stable brand. At least until now. So, confusion reigned for a while at the RockmusicRaider offices.

Just think back to the outstanding ’96 album Elegy or the 2015 piece Under The Red Cloud, perhaps with the exception of Circle that earned less brownie points. In this sense, the puzzle did not fit at all. The supreme powers that be @ RMR thus decreed a forced waiting time until such time that a better copy would become available. And – lo and behold – the moment hi-fi amps started to flow from the music machine, things started to change.  [...]  Got hooked? Raid on...!

Ostura – The Room (2018) – Review

RockmusicRaider Review - Ostura - The Room - Album CoverI am amazed. These guys managed to get the attention of Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon, Guilt MachineStream of Passion, The Gentle Storm), plus secured the services of a felt gazillion of additional guest performers from 12 countries. As if this weren’t enough, they got Jens Bogren of Fascination Street Studios to do the mixing and mastering piece. Then the band forged ahead and landed us with 74 minutes of progressive goodness on 12 tracks. Wow!

And this raised a major concern right from the beginning. Do we have another case of extensive, badly managed complexity that raises its ugly head? It for sure sounded like that to me at first. After all, this kind of pitfall already was a point of major discord in many a prog record in the past.  [...]  Got hooked? Raid on...!
